According to a new report, Steam Deck's frame rate limiter adds significant input lag

According to a new report, the recently introduced Steam Deck frame rate limiter option increases input lag.Reddit user Dacvak recently shared a new report on the Steam Deck subreddit that highlights how enabling frame rate limiter with the new option results in input lag.
The game used for testing was Rogue Legacy 2.I decided to run lag tests on Steam Deck (first to see the added lag when connected to a TV with a PS5 wireless controller - incidentally, on my display it only added 12ms of input lag), but in running my tests, I discovered something interesting.
Turning on the frame rate limiter in the Performance menu adds an egregious input delay that scales somewhat linearly with the limiter.
These timings were taken with the Steam Deck undocked.Upcapped: 31.8ms60fps cap: 75.8ms30fps cap: 145.9ms50hz/uncapped: 32.5ms50hz/50fps cap: 94.2ms50hz/25fps cap: 186.1ms40hz/uncapped: 34.
3ms40hz/40fps cap: 121.1ms40hz/20fps cap: 232.0msDacvak also tested running a game on Steam Deck with built-in frame rate limiting, such as Rocket League.
In this case, there was no additional input lag.
Thus, using built-in frame rate limits seems to be the appropriate way to go at this point, even though it may cause uneven frame movement or screen tearing when the internal frame rate and screen refresh rate are out of sync.As stated below, I tested the game with the built-in frame rate limit option (not to be confused with vertical sync) and then set the Steam Deck to the appropriate refresh rate.
In this case, I set the frame limit for Rocket League to 50 fps (the RL didn't have an option for 40 fps) and set the Steam Deck screen refresh rate to 50 Hz.
This resulted in minimal or no input lag, making it the most viable solution when limiting frame rate for performance/standby time reasons.Steam Deck SteamOS was recently updated with a beta patch 3.2, which added not only the ability to change the screen refresh rate in the game, but also some other features like OS-driven fan curve and more.
