A cocktail of social deduction similar to Among Us, combined with the ticking hours of survival game fear, the game has quietly amassed a huge player base, to the point where it has been in the top ten most played games on Steam for over a month. This success was so enormous and unexpected that developer Dread Hunger Team had to change development priorities to meet demand.Although the game was available for months in early access mode, where Dread Hunger averaged a few hundred players at a time, it achieved success upon its official release in January, reaching over 100,000 players, one million copies sold and being in the top ten most played simultaneously on Steam along with Grand Theft Auto 5 and Elden Ring.\"The surge in popularity was completely unexpected \"We were pleased that as we approached full release we began to see the hype grow and people begin to understand our game.\"Dread Hunger is a survival game in which eight players must guide their ship through the 19th century Arctic, stopping and exploring on foot in search of fuel, food and other resources. While this is difficult enough on its own, two of the players find themselves under the influence of evil forces and begin secretly sabotaging the group. The combination of deception and survival games clearly worked, but popularity brought its own problems, most notably in the form of cyber attacks, which forced the Dread Hunger team of about eight people collaborating between developers Digital Confectioners and Slowdrive Studios to refocus on where to direct their resources. The biggest problem we faced was DDoS attacks and the need to bolster our infrastructure. But that's what happens when you get big - you get targeted - so it shows that we must be doing something right. While the Dread Hunger team believes these attacks are now under control, the need to bolster our digital defenses means that releasing new content has taken a back seat.Lately, infrastructure and fraud protection have taken priority over new content. We would love to work on new content, but obviously cheating and server outages mean you can't play the game at all, which makes these issues the most important to address as soon as possible. We're very happy with the growth that Dread Hunger is experiencing, so at this point we want to improve conditions for our loyal players. We feel we've already dealt with these issues well enough, so we look forward to releasing new content as soon as we can. This content is outlined in Dread Hunger's 2022 roadmap, which promises that new prestige levels and cosmetic types are coming soon, with more extensive additions such as new area, ship customization options and spells planned for later this year.Given the unpredictable nature of Dread Hunger and the amount of unexpected work it has required so far, however, developers are not planning \"We would like to consider releasing the game on consoles so that everyone can enjoy Dread Hunger regardless of platform,\" said Gellen.
